Most people find it easier to return a sweater than to tell a partner they're not satisfied in bed. This is not a personal failing. It's a product of living in a culture that treats sexual preference as either obvious or embarrassing, never just useful information.
It is useful information. And the conversation is worth having.
Here's how to actually do it.
Trying to have a big conversation about what you want sexually in the middle of sex is like trying to give driving directions while merging onto a highway. The timing creates pressure that makes everyone worse at listening.
Start the conversation when neither of you is in the moment. Over dinner, on a walk, in the car where you don't have to make eye contact. Lower stakes, better reception.
There's a meaningful difference between "I love when you do X" and "you never do X." Both might be true. One of them opens a conversation; the other starts a negotiation.
Beginning with what works, even if there's not much of it yet, signals that you're building something rather than cataloging complaints. That's a much easier conversation for both people to be in.
"I want more foreplay" is technically information, but it doesn't give your partner much to work with. "I'd love if we spent more time on X before we move to Y" is specific enough to act on.
You don't have to deliver a full briefing. You just need to be concrete enough that your partner isn't guessing.
One conversation doesn't fix everything forever. Desires change. What worked six months ago might not be what you want now. What you weren't ready to ask for then might be something you want to try.
The couples who navigate this well aren't the ones who had one perfect conversation. They're the ones who made it normal to keep talking. To check in after sex, to mention something they read, to say "that was really good, can we do more of that?"
It doesn't have to be a big deal every time. It just has to be something you do.
It probably will, at first. That's not a sign you're doing it wrong. It's a sign you're doing something new. Awkward is survivable. Silence costs more.
